BEACHWORLD MINIATURE BIOSPHERES
The Beachworld miniature biospheres are hermetically sealed marine ecosystems that surround the core tasks of our land and draw the life from natural elements such as light and heat.
Inside the Beachworld miniature biospheres live red shrimp are which are only found on some Pacific Islands. They live in small pools of salt water formed in the lava rocks. Thick layers of algae cover the walls of dark red puddles, together with other types of macro-algae. Animals don’t eat the macro-algae but rather care, nourishing of microalgae and bacteria growing on it. Hence, they are literally gardeners of their habitat: maintain the environmental balance inside the wells and store them clean so that the large algae can thrive.
How does a Beachworld works?
In Beachworld miniature biospheres we rebuild the environment of lakes Anchialini (half freshwater and half saltwater); large and microscopic algae present within it produce the oxigen and food for the animals. They will reciprocate by providing the substances necessary for their growth: carbon dioxide and nutrients and nitrogenous substances. It is possible to observe the animals often graze on bigger algae, taking care of. If the shrimp is disturbed, it tends to temporarily lose his bright red in an attempt to blend in with the background. Once calmed down, soon becomes red again.
Normally this crustacean don’t breed within the mini-ecosystem as it likes to thrive in dark secluded places.
The average life of a forecast over Beachworld is 7 years, although there have been cases where its inhabitants have lived very much longer.
This is an educational product and piece of furniture, it is not suitable for children under six years.
Treat it with care.

STEP 1:
take your Beachworld immediately out from its box. Gently shake to free the shrimp that may have been trapped under the sand during transportation.
STEP 2:
After transport, take your Biosphere out of its box the sooner the possible. water could be a bit dirty for the first or even the second day. Don’t worry! It will become clear soon again. During the winter, due to the effects of the cold, shrimps can be numb and appear dead. In this case, leave the biosphere under artificial light for 24-48 / hours continuously in a warm environment.
STEP 3
Place the biosphere in a place where it receives enough light. Especially in the winter months, provide 6 to 8 hours of artificial light per day. Never allow the Biosphere to receive direct sunlight. The room temperature must be constant, between 16 ° C and 27 ° C.
STEP 4
Observe the biosphere carefully during the first month to make sure it is in a suitable location. Lighting is the primary factor. The Biosphere needs light to activate photosynthesis. If there is too much light, the algae will proliferate on the glass (however, shrimps will love this!). Remember to clean the glass from the inside, using the magnet, at least once a week, to prevent stains from becoming toxic. If light is not enough, photosynthesis does not activate and the shrimps will be left without oxygen. If needed, change the position of the biosphere, checking it every day for several weeks to make sure the new position is suitable.

RULE 1
You must provide your biosphere (Beachworld) with a lot of light every day, to allow life processes (photosynthesis) to take place. We
suggest 6 to 8 hours of artificial light per day, directed towards the biosphere (see table below). Neon, led and incandescent bulbs are suggested. NEVER use halogen lights It is important to make sure that the hot lights do not heat the sphere.
RULE 2
NEVER expose your Beachworld to direct sunray or to a halogen light. Take care to avoid abrupt changes in temperature. The water heats up too much and the glass could act like a burning glass.
RULE 3
For the first month, check your biosphere daily. Make sure the shrimp are of an orange / red color and are peaceful. They should rest on sands or on coral. If your shrimps are almost transparent and seem restless, it is likely that the amount of light is not enough. To solve the problem provide them with more artificial light, check the temperature and make sure your biosphere is not placed in a noisy room.
RULE 4
If you have to leave for more than two days, entrust your Biosphere to a friend or use a light connected to an electric timer.
RULE 5
Place your biosphere in an area with a constant temperature, between 16 ° and 27 ° C. In case of excessive heat, put your biosphere in a container with fresh water to cool it. In case of low temperatures cover it with a plaid. You can also ask our Customer Service for advice: info@theartofscience.eu

Algae on the glass.
A small number of algae on the glass is beneficial as it indicates that the biosphere receives enough light. Remember to clean the glass at least once a week to prevent stains from becoming toxic. To clean the glass from the inside use the magnet supplied with the product, gently passing it back and forth over the glass.
Milky water.
This is a signal of presence of bacteria in the water. If this happens, place the Beachworld in a well-lit area for a few days, until the water does not get clear again. The patina may be a sign that a shrimp has died.
Dead shrimp.
After a few years the shrimp will die of natural causes. If you see several dead shrimps within the first week of receipt, this could indicate that there was a problem during transport. If a shrimp dies and the Beachworld is crystal clear, there is no algae on the glass or any on the shells in the sand, it means that you need to give the biosphere more light.
Temperature.
After transport or after exposure to temperatures below the minimum values indicated, a phenomenon may occur that can be defined as “cold numbness”: shrimps may appear dead even for a few days. Should this occur, place the biosphere at the indicated temperatures (+ 16 ° / + 27 ° C) providing it with artificial light for 24/48 h.
presence of microalge.
Shrimps feed on microalgae (also responsible for oxygen production) which are almost invisible. Their presence is therefore vital. Make sure that there is a “moss” effect on the shells and on the sand, that is a greenish patina made up of microalgae.
Floating Exoskeleton.
Inside the ecosystem you may find small transparent objects (Exoskeletons) that look like shrimps but moving rather slowly and irregularly. These are the discarded carapace of the shrimps. The fact that the shrimps shed their skin is additional proof that the animals are healthy.
